Scripture: Matt 22:30 Nov 26, 2017

I. 5 Biblical thoughts on Marriage, Concerning the Unmarried

1.Being married is not a requirement, nor always better than being unmarried.
•Matthew 22:30
•It is better to be (choose one):

1. Unmarried and Faithful

or

2. Married and Unfaithful

2.The required purpose of every Christian is FAITHFULNESS to God, not marriage or children.
•Ecclesiastes 12:13 “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:

Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all.”

3.In some cases, you must remain unmarried IN ORDER TO BE faithful.
•1 Corinthians 7:10-11

4.As Christians, our “VALUE” and “IDENTITY” is NOT found in Marriage or Sexuality.
•Romans 8:29-30
•Galatians 2:20

5.While some “roles” in Christianity/the church require marriage, most do not. (

  • 1 Cor. 7:9;
  • Song of Solomon 3:5)

II. 3 Biblical Admonitions to the Single

1.If you are single, you have TIME, ENERGY, FOCUS and/or RESOURCES that Married Christians often do not. Use them in God’s service.
•1 Corinthians 7:7-8; 32-35
•Matthew 19:9-12

•Being single has some benefits that being married does not.

2.You make a difference/have a role in this church family.

•1 Corinthians 12:15 “If the foot should say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body,’ is it therefore not of the body?”

3.Be careful not to let being alone lead to self-pity, and selfishness.
•Genesis 2:18, “It is not good that man should be alone.

•Married and unmarried people both feel loneliness from time to time.

III. 3 Reminders to All of Us

1.The Importance of Friendship
•We live in a society obsessed with romantic love.

•2 Samuel 1:26 “I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; You have been very pleasant to me; Your love to me was wonderful, Surpassing the love of women.”

•Proverbs 18:24 “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”

2.The Importance of Continued Inclusion
•Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 “Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up. 11 Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone? 12 Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

3.The Importance of Siblinghood in Christ
•Galatians 3:26-29
•Our relationship in Christ supersedes those other designations.
